Missouri Pacific SL-1 #1408 by Sam Loyd
November 11, 2007. MP 1408 by Sam Loyd is a kitbash starting with the Athearn SW1200 model with a custom cast hood and added detail parts from various sources. While it may be thought that this model would be easily created, Sam found that not to be the case. Take your time in looking at the photos and especially note the subtle changes as the model progresses. Having taken several photos of these units myself and taking measurements of several of their features I wasn't prepared for the differences Sam pointed out as he made his drawings.
If you are interested in doing a MP slug, then pick your unit carefully paying attention to how many images you have of a particular unit. Things to look for are end hand rails, end deck configuration, the MU connections and the configuration of the wiring to the lead switcher unit, fuel tanks and air tank arrangements and air filter size and hinge placement.
At the time of this writing, the unit is starting to get it's weathering as can be seen in the photos. This is the first phase of weathering and does not reflect what the unit will eventually look like.
Since Sam cast his hoods he decided to do a unit in the MP/UP merger scheme. These shots show off the detail very nicely.
